About Anthony

At my local hacker-space monthly meet-up, 'OzBerry' in Sydney, I gave a presentation on my experiences visiting Shenzhen, China, in October 2014.

According to my mother, I’ve been “technically minded” since I electrocuted myself as a toddler by sticking something pointy and metallic into a 240VAC wall-socket. Apparently I recovered from that questionable beginning, and most of my career has been in the application of electronics and embedded systems to commercial and industrial products and navigating their myriad design constraints.

I bring a cool head & good-humoured approach to a serious endeavour that comes from 35 years of commercial & industrial experience primarily in electronics design, and in IT/computers/networks, and operating my own branded self-employment for 15+ years. For 5 years in San Francisco (2015-2020) I demonstrated I can still "play well with others" in the employer/employee context (the USA has no visa options for long-term freelance foreigners 🤷🏻‍♂️).

As a versatile, generalist electronics design engineer who likes to keep an eye on the bigger picture, I’m always ready to get my hands dirty with details. I work at the system, circuit, and PCB design levels (not silicon design), with a strong preference for hardware, aka “my favourite programming language is solder”.

I'm comfortable operating across the development spectrum from "hack it 'n whack it" through to a mature iterated design that's ready for efficient manufacturing & testing, and subject to a range of international regulatory & compliance requirements.

I’ve seen an awful lot of mistakes made, money wasted, and opportunities lost, by colleagues, managers, business owners, clients… and myself. Thankfully I’ve also seen plenty of examples of things done right and successfully! I will not hesitate to tell you clearly when I observe you about to repeat one of those experience-patterns which are likely to lead to failure!
